It is a great privilege and responsibility to be entrusted with the editorship of the Indian Journal of Medical Microbiology at an important juncture of its 20th volume of publication. Initiated and nurtured by the determination of Dr. KB Sharma, the founder editor, and carefully tended by the subsequent editors, the journal has grown into a widely read and referenced resource for microbiologists in the medical field. We owe a great deal to Dr. PG Shivananda and his editorial board for bringing the journal to its high quality publication. With such standards to start with it is our turn now to move forward.
The present times are more challenging than ever before. On one hand, there is large volume of medical research competing for attention from the medical professionals coupled with the literal explosion of information made possible by the induction of electronic communication via the Internet. On the other hand, with limited budgets, professionals are forced to be selective about allocation of funds for scientific information resources. Journals have become expensive and subscriptions must be worth the price.
A journal, therefore, is faced with the daunting task of providing the best in terms of quality information that will meet the challenges of the electronic information age. It is time now to face the challenge and march ahead.
With the able collaboration of my editorial board, we will attempt to meet the new challenges which include selecting relevant manuscripts from a large number that are submitted and tapping all advantages of the electronic communication. With the special help of our website editor, Dr. Sreedharan Athmanathan, our goal is to make our journal available to a large readership on and on several other electronic linkages on the web. The well established peer-review process of the journal would continue and would involve many more national and international experts in microbiology.
Over the next few years, the journal will witness changes which we hope will build on its successes. We march forward with great appreciation to our predecessors and with commitment, enthusiasm and excitement of the future possibilities.
