Dear Editor, Acute otitis media (AOM) is one of the commonest diseases seen in children along with tonsillitis. Hearing loss of 20% have been reported in cases of otitis media in school children. Hence, a one year study from January 2000 to December 2000 was conducted to study the prevalent organisms in acute otitis media in the pediatric age group. Ear discharge swabs taken from 111 pediatric patients suffering from AOM were studied for aerobic organisms by standard laboratory techniques. Of the 111 swabs, 99 showed growth giving an isolation rate of 89.19%. Single organism was isolated from 78 patients (70.2%) and in 21 cases two organisms were isolated (18.9%). A total of 120 organisms were recovered from 99 culture positive cases. The various organisms isolated and their sensitivity pattern is shown in the [Table - 1]. The commonest isolate was P. aeruginosa (28.3%), followed by S. aureus (26.6%). Out of 4 Candida spp. isolated, two were in combination with S. aureus and in two patients Candida spp. were the sole isolates.
