Toxoplasma antibody levels in females with habitual or sporadic abortions and normal pregnancies

Dear Editor,

Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular protozoon, ubiquitous in nature, is an important cause of infection and disease in humans and domestic animals. There are several causative factors responsible for both habitual and sporadic abortions. However, the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in women with bad obstetrics history is known to be significantly higher than in normals.[1] The maternal infection is often asymptomatic or it results in a clinical disease that is not recognized. Antibody screening programmes aimed at the diagnosis of T. gondii infection among pregnant women have therefore been introduced in several countries.[2] The seroprevalence in pregnant women, on worldwide scale, varies from 7 to 51.3% and in women with abnormal pregnancies and abortions the seroprevalence varies from 17.5 to 53.3%.[3] The present report is based on the assessment of Toxoplasma antibody levels in pregnant women with history of abortions and versus normal pregnancies.

Blood samples from 418 pregnant women attending antenatal clinic and/or, admitted to Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi were collected, Out of these, 61 cases had a history of habitual abortions, 107 sporadic abortions and the rest 250 represented normal pregnancies.

For quantitative determination of IgG class antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in human serum a solid phase enzyme immunoassay (Sandwich ELISA) was done by Toxoplasma gondii, IgG EIA Kit supplied by Labsystems, Helsinki, Finland. Test was interpreted as per manufacturer's instructions. Absorbance was recorded at 405 nm, and titre was calculated in IU/mL. Values of 160 IU/mL as high positive [Table:1].

Our study found a statistical difference (X2= 103.7 and pToxoplasma in habitual abortion group as compared to sporadic abortion group or normal pregnancies. In a study carried out in Egypt, ELISA (IgG and IgM) was conducted to study Toxoplasma antibodies in normal and complicated pregnancy and a significant difference was seen between complicated cases and controls.[4] Thus, newborn who were clinically suspected of having toxoplasmosis need to be investigated for the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma antibodies. This would help to establish a clear correlation between the antibody levels and recurrent abortions on a regional basis.
