The first attempt by the author to bring out a text book in Microbiology for the undergraduate students is commendable. The chapters have been arranged in the standard pattern of microbiology text books with a short historical introduction followed by microscopy and morphology of bacteria. A line diagram of the various microscopes with their light path ways would have made understanding the principles simple. The subsequent chapters are written well with basic information required for an undergraduate student. Quality of some of the photographs could have been improved. Diagrams of steam sterilizer and autoclaves do not depict the recent equipment. Chapter on bacterial taxonomy could have preceded the chapter on bacterial morphology. Bacterial genetics has been written well and should be easy to comprehend by the student. A chapter on microbial pathogenicity will help students to understand infectious disease process. Immunology has been explained in detail in ten chapters, however, anatomy of immune apparatus should have preceded the chapter on antigen. Immunohaematology is a welcome addition. Specific bacteria have been dealt adequately for undergraduate MBBS students. Common viral infections and their agents have been discussed in details. The fifth section deals with medically important fungal infections. Diagrammatic representations of fungal elements have been adequately done in the section. The final chapter discusses some common infections including hospital acquired infections. Antimicrobial therapy, antimicrobial sensitivity testing, bacteriology of water, milk, air and hospital waste management are important chapters which will be useful for a medical student. However, some spelling mistakes and grammatical errors need to be corrected in subsequent editions. Some of the diagrams and clarity of photographs can be improved. References to contexts mentioned in the text could have been cited at the end of each chapter for further reading. The book is recommended for MBBS, MSc Medical Microbiology and BSc MLT students.
