Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae. Vibrio cholerae O139 emerged as a pathogen and has been reported from various parts of India.,,, An outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred in June and July of 2000 and 2001 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and in the neighbouring villages of other districts. In patients admitted for acute gastroenteritis at Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Tropical and Communicable Diseases (Fever Hospital), Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh),Vibrio cholerae O139 along with Vibrio cholerae E1 Tor (Ogawa) were isolated from the stool cultures. A peak in isolation of Vibrio cholerae O139 was noticed in the months of June and July and 2000 and 2001 (Table:1). However, a few isolates were documented in the months of August to November.
Identification was done according to standard recommended procedures. Most of them were sensitive to routinely tested antibiotics. A total of 91 strains of Vibrio cholerae O139 were isolated, identified and confirmed by NICED, kolkata, and NICD, Delhi. The present work reports the largest no. of isolates reported so far from one centre.
