Arora DR. Text book of Microbiology. 2nd edition. CBS Publishers & Distributors, Darya Ganj, New Delhi, 2003. Rs.340.00

The second edition of "Textbook of Microbiology" by Prof. DR Arora is a rich and welcome addition in the teaching materials available to undergraduate and postgraduate students in Medical Microbiology. The book has been thoroughly revised and appropriate new chapters have been added, making it a comprehensive textbook for teaching. I am sure this book has already found place in the libraries of several medical colleges and as personal copies of students and teachers. The multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter are very helpful to the students to assess their understanding of the chapter. The photographs, figures and line diagrams are appropriately placed, however, printing could have been better. Several chapters have been modified to include clinically important information thereby making the book useful to all practitioners of infectious diseases. The chapter on hospital associated infections (chapter 70) is very useful. Being brief it should probably have referred to the very relevant disposal of hospital waste in chapter 5. Microbiology of various infective syndromes (chapter 69) is a commendable effort to place the subject of medical microbiology in the right perspective for the readers, especially the students.
