Four years have passed since the editorial office of Indian Journal of Medical Microbiology (IJMM) moved to the L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, and yet there is hardly any symptom of stress. Except for the initial hiccup of raising funds, the voyage was a smooth sail with every issue published on time. I have been privileged to have the support of an exemplary editorial board. The loyalty of the board members to the Journal's mission, consistent attention to details and timely help, ensured its high quality. We enjoyed good relations with the printer (Sai Sri Printers, Hyderabad) and Medknow Publications, who have helped us with the electronic manuscript management system and development of the website of the journal. The assistant editors contributed much valuable time and energy and the editorial assistant, Ms. K Sridevi worked as if there was no tomorrow. Although all components of any production process are critical to the end product, the efforts of non-member peer reviewers from around the world deserve a special recognition and thanks.
The changes in the journal during these past years include broadened participation by IAMM members and non-members worldwide, in peer review process. While the journal face sheet was retained, the article sections were restructured for a consistent format, accommodating different types of submissions.
The constructive changes in the Journal in the recent past would include:
1. Participation of IAMM members and non-members worldwide in peer review process of the Journal.
2. Inclusion of a special article section allowing publication of articles with original and high quality study design and data.
3. Adoption of structured abstract for special articles and original articles , enforcing discipline among authors to include study design and other details.
4. Development of the IJMM web site ( in 2002 with full text of articles along with other contributions (procedure manuals) from IAMM members. Recently we have redesigned and restructured our website. The website address remains unchanged []. The features of the updated website include:
Free full text of articles can be accessed without login.
Access to articles in PDF format after registration and login only; registration is free.
Link to abstracts from cited references.
Facility to submit comments on articles.
Email notifications on new issue release.
Statistics about number of downloads and visits for each article.
Better user interface and structure based on OpenURL, DC metadata and other international standards.
5. Development of online submission and manuscript management on
6. Enhancement in the quality of paper and printing and inclusion of colour prints of figures/advertisements.
7. Inclusion of the Journal in indexing agencies such as Elsevier Science EMBASE and IndMED.
The major changes in the coming years are bound to revolve around evolution to all-electronic Journal management. Hopefully, this transition will provide advantage to authors and reviewers alike. It is hoped that the entire process of writing, submitting, reviewing and publishing articles in IJMM will graduate to all electronic formats. Benefits of an Internet based system already include automatic email notifications to authors and reviewers and on-line editing. Online manuscript submission and processing eliminates use of post/courier, manuscripts can be received and processed any time and from anywhere allowing editors and reviewers to work from any PC. The net result is decreased time in peer review and processing of submitted manuscripts.
Once submitted, articles can be tracked for their progress during the review process till publication. Comments of the editorial board can be checked from the site and revised articles can be submitted by a single click. Proofs are also managed through this system. Authors can manage multiple submissions from a single user interface.
For reviewers, the system provides 'anytime' and 'anywhere' access to manuscripts. They also have access to a pre-formatted MEDLINE results and can review comments of other reviewers and get feedback on the decision on manuscript.
This Journal is moving forward in a quest to achieve an eminent status among world's clinical microbiology journals. Regardless of electronic marvels, traditional editing will be maintained, probably forever, for quality control. It is anticipated that not only the editors but the authors, reviewers and readers, are increasingly going to demand more evidence based material in future and this Journal will play an important role in promoting the same. This editor has thoroughly enjoyed the job and gratefully acknowledges the contributions of the predecessors and the peers in this great voyage.
