The seventh edition of this book contains chapters which are easy to read and comprehend including summary of important examination oriented study material. Sections include basic bacteriology with schematic diagrams and tables of important facts. Pathogenesis of infectious diseases, host defenses and laboratory diagnosis of some common bacterial infections of clinical importance form the first section. The second section of the book deals briefly with specific bacteria devoting separate sections to organisms related to enteric and respiratory tracts. A chapter on zoonotic organisms has also been included. Basic Virology includes structure, replication and classification of viruses with pathogenesis of viral diseases. Chapters to note in this section are brief outline of genetics and gene therapy, anti-viral drugs and viral vaccines. These informations, although concise are upto date. The fourth section of the book includes, the RNA and DNA virus of human importance, a chapter on prions and slow virus with minor viral pathogens like Ebola, Hanta, Nipa and other recently discovered viruses associated with specific disease syndromes. Brief information of fungi in the section on mycology and medically important parasites in the section on parasitology form the fifth and the sixth part of this review. Immunology section includes a little more detailed information than previous chapters, with simple diagrams and flow charts which are easy to comprehend. This chapter will be especially of interest to students of basic and clinical immunology. Autoimmune disorders, immunodeficiency diseases and tumor immunity have been briefly dealt with in the subsequent sections. The last section of the book is completely devoted to preparatory examinations with brief summary of medically important microorganisms. Easy to remember facts will make this chapter a favourite among students. Ten clinical cases with problem based questions and their answers are examples of changing question patterns. A bank of 654 questions at the end of the book with answers after each block will be useful not only for students preparing for USMLE (National Boards) examination but for those in India preparing for postgraduate entrance examinations. The varied types of question patterns will stimulate students to analyze and respond.
This is a highly readable practical book with concise, up to date and relevant information for students of medical microbiology. For the teachers of medical/clinical microbiology this book will help in preparing problem based study material and questions for interactive sessions.
