Arora DR, Arora B. Medical Parasitology reprinted 2002, CBS Publishers and Distributors, Darya Ganj, New Delhi. Rs.160.00
Medical Parasitology by Dr.DR Arora and Dr.B Arora, first published in 2001 and reprinted in 2002 by CBS publishers fills in a much needed gap in the availability of a good text book of parasitology for medical students in India, Nepal and other neighbouring countries. After the book -Parasitology by KD Chaterjee, went out of print, Dr. Arora's book comes as a welcome change. Written in simple format in a narrative style, this book includes three sections, one each of general parasitology, protozoology and helminthology. The general section deals with definitions, a brief account of host parasite interactions and general pattern of laboratory approach to diagnosis. Protozoology section includes the medically important protozoa and the phylogenetic classification. Chapters have been devoted to individual protozoa beginning with the most commonly encountered amoebae. Line diagrams depicting morphological forms and life cycles are clear and easy to comprehend. Each chapter ends with a set of self assessment questions comprising of multiple choice and essay type. This will be a useful preparatory exercise. Color plates of macroscopic and microscopic tissue sections and smears are of good quality.
Perhaps few maps to highlight the geographical and national distribution of some important protozoal infections of public health importance, like malaria, Leishmaniasis would have been useful. Absence of dosage of some commonly prescribed agents in the treatment of protozoal infections is a minor lacunae. Helminthology section begins with an introductory chapter devoted to general characters and classification of helminths followed by individual groups. Up-to-date nomenclatures and classifications have been adhered to while describing these parasites. Common disease syndromes, associated conditions and their laboratory diagnosis have been described well. Unlike the treatment of protozoal infections the dosage of anthelminthics have been included. Chapter of current interest includes parasitic opportunistic infections in AIDS. Brief outline of diagnostic procedures and overview of essential facts for recall in the last two chapters conclude the book. Teachers of Microbiology will also find it a good reading material and may encourage their students and libraries to acquire it at an affordable price of Rs.160/. Authors are appreciated for their efforts.
