We agree with the suggestion by Dr. A. Chaudhury that Cryptosporidium is an important intestinal pathogen and has been reported both in immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. We have also concluded in a separate earlier report (Nat Med J India 1999; 12:207-9) that there is a need for specific staining techniques to detect Cryptosporidium in routine diagnostic laboratories.
However, the study in question was a retrospective analysis of the 82,667 stool samples investigated from 1988 to 1997 for intestinal parasitic pathogen in the department of Parasitology, PGIMER, Chandigarh. The data for the presence of 'Cryptosporidium' in this report was not included because all the samples were not subjected to special staining procedure/s for the detection of Cryptosporidium.
