As we enter the third millennium and prepare to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of our beloved Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists, we can look back with satisfaction on the growth of the official publication of IAMM - The Indian Journal of Medical Microbiology.
As I laid down the office of President of IAMM in December 1982, the incoming President of IAMM, Professor Shriniwas asked me to bring out the journal of IAMM and be its first editor. His desire was that the
inaugural issue should be released at the Solapur Conference in November 1983. I agreed with some misgivings but I was lucky to be ably supported by Professor Kunti Prakash who agreed to become the Associate Editor. We were able to bring out the first issue by the stipulated date and it was a source of great satisfaction for us and the President.
The editorial office remained with me for six years. Those were the days when we toiled to bring the journal on time with limited funds. The funds were generated by advertisements and we did not impinge on
the meager funds of IAMM. From 1983 till 1988 we were able to bring out the journal on time and the printer being a friend only charged us the basic costs. Proof- reading was done by us. All our friends in IAMM chipped in
by sending papers, carrying out peer reviews. Those were the days when we had the satisfaction of putting the journal on its feet.
The distinguished editors who followed were Professor N.K.Ganguly (1989-91), Professor Thyagarajan ( 1992-94), Professor Sambasiva Rao (1995-1997), Professor M.K.Lalitha (1998-2000) and now Professor
Shivananda and Dr.Savitri Sharma have taken over the cudgels on behalf of
IAMM.
They took the journal forward on a fast track and today it can boast of international standards. Over the years , the journal has grown in stature keeping its commitment to the advancement of field of microbiology and laboratory medicine.
Time has now come to take the journal in to the third millennium with enlarging its activities on an International scale, to have an
International panel of Board of Editors, invite more articles from international specialists. I am sure under the leadership of Professors Shivananda and Savitri Sharma it will reach the heights of Microbiology journalism that it deserves.
